Scarborough 400: A Birthday 400 Years in the Making

Four hundred years is a long time to be in business. Most companies don't last four decades. Scarborough's been welcoming visitors for four centuries.

We've been managing holiday properties here since 2020, and this year feels different. There's a celebration happening across town that goes deeper than just another summer season. Britain's first seaside resort is marking 400 years since it all began, and everywhere you look, there's something that reminds you this place has so much history .

How It Started: One Woman and a Spring

Back in 1626, a woman named Thomasin Farrer was walking along the South Bay cliffs when she spotted a natural spring. Most people would have kept walking. She didn't. She tasted the water, discovered it was packed with minerals, and people soon worked out it made them feel better. Word spread. Visitors started arriving from across the country to "take the waters," and just like that, the British seaside holiday was born.

Not in Brighton. Not in Blackpool. Right here in Scarborough.

What 400 Years Looks Like

When you walk the promenade today, you're walking in the footsteps of four centuries of holidaymakers. The Grand Hotel, completed in 1867, was the largest in Europe when it opened. Its design is deliberate: four towers for the seasons, 12 floors for the months, 52 chimneys for the weeks, and originally 365 bedrooms - one for every day of the year.

The Scarborough Spa evolved from that tiny well Thomasin found into the grand entertainment complex you see today. We were the first to roll wooden "bathing machines" into the sea so Victorian visitors could take a modest dip. Everything that became standard at British seaside resorts started here first.

The 2026 Celebrations

The town's marking the anniversary throughout the year, and some of it's genuinely worth planning a trip around.

The Giant Deckchair Trail has oversized, artist-designed deckchairs hidden across Scarborough in scenic spots. Maps are available locally, and they're perfect for family photos if you can track them down.

In July, a new heritage sculpture will be unveiled at South Bay, celebrating Thomasin Farrer's discovery. As autumn arrives, illuminated light installations in Peasholm Park will bring the 400-year story to life after dark. Worth staying into September if you can.

The Scarborough Art Gallery has a spectacular exhibition charting 400 years of sun, sea, and sand. If you're staying for a few days and the weather turns, it's one of the better indoor options.

Why This Matters for Your Holiday

You might wonder why history matters when you're just after a beach break. Fair point. But Scarborough's anniversary means the town's put effort into making 2026 special. Events are better funded. Attractions have been spruced up. There's a little more pride and sparkle that goes beyond the usual summer season scramble.

Four hundred years doesn't come around often. W ell, it comes around exactly once.

Where We Fit In

Louise and Rich have been managing holiday properties here for six years. That's nothing compared to 400, but it's long enough to see how Scarborough changes and how it stays the same.

We've got 14 properties now - some we own, others we manage for owners who wanted a more personal approach than the corporate companies offer. They're all within walking distance of either North Bay or South Bay, which means you're never far from the beaches that started this whole seaside holiday tradition.

The anniversary's brought more interest in staying here, which means our larger properties for summer weeks are booking earlier than usual. If you're thinking about a Scarborough break this year - particularly for July or August - don't wait until June to sort it.

What Guests Are Actually Asking

"Is it going to be busier because of the 400th?"

Probably, yes. Summer's always busy, but this year there's extra draw. The celebrations aren't creating huge crowds - this isn't a one-day event - but there's definitely more interest in visiting.

"Are the deckchairs worth finding?"

If you've got kids, yes. It gives them something to hunt for beyond just beach time. If you're child-free, it's a nice walk around town but not essential.

"What's the best way to learn about the history?"

The Scarborough Maritime & Heritage Centre on Eastborough has a special exhibition explaining the past 400 years of the Spa and town. Open all year. It's compact but well done, and you can see it in under an hour.

Booking for the Anniversary Year

Our availability for peak summer (July-August) is booking up even faster than usual. We've got a few properties left for June and plenty for September, which is honestly one of the better months anyway - warmer sea, quieter beaches, and you still get the celebrations.

Bigger houses tend to book first. Extended families booking reunions, groups of friends coordinating diaries, corporate teams needing flexible accommodation. By the time people realise they need somewhere, the choice has usually narrowed.

If you're planning a group trip, book now rather than hoping something opens up last-minute. It rarely does.
